The Payroll Specialist is responsible for delivering accurate and compliant payroll services, providing an exceptional employee experience, managing payroll vendors and key stakeholders, and driving data insights, process improvements, and operational excellence across payroll operations
What You'll Be Doing
Payroll Processing & Compliance
- Collect, organise, and validate payroll data from stores and internal departments, ensuring accuracy before submission to the payroll system.
- Accurately process fortnightly payroll from start to finish, ensuring compliance across Australian Retail.
- Support New Zealand and Central payrolls.
- Ensure payroll deadlines are met, including month and year end processing, superannuation and payroll tax submissions.
- Review payroll output reports to ensure correct processing of variables such as overtime, allowances, and deductions.
- Submission of GL reconciliation and accruals to Finance
Employee Experience
- Act as a trusted advisor to employees, providing expert guidance on payroll inquiries.
- Develop clear and engaging communication strategies to enhance employee understanding of payroll processes
- Collaborate with HR, Workforce Planning, leadership, and the wider office team to improve the overall employee experience.
Vendor & Stakeholder Management
- Manage relationships with payroll providers, ensuring seamless service delivery.
- Partner with internal teams to implement new payroll initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with the Workforce Planning (WFP) team to support accurate workforce data, reporting, roster-related processes, and payroll outcomes.
- Partner with managers and stakeholders to provide guidance and education on payroll processes, policies, legislative requirements, and best practices, ensuring consistent understanding and compliance across the business.
Data, Analytics & Process Improvement
- Analyse payroll utilization trends, employee feedback, and compliance risks to drive continuous improvement.
- Support process reviews and implement technical solutions to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Ensure payroll systems and processes align with business objectives and employee needs
Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities through AI, automation, and digital solutions, leveraging data insights to improve operational efficiency, compliance, reporting, and decision-making.
About You
You will bring:
- 3-5 years' payroll experience in a high-volume environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Finance, Business or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will also be considered.
- Proven end-to-end payroll processing experience.
- Strong experience using Dayforce (essential), Preceda, SuccessFactors, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word and Outlook) & Microsoft Copilot
- Experience managing payroll compliance and legislative requirements.
- Experience working with payroll providers and external stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, awards and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of New Zealand payroll legislation (highly desirable).
- Strong understanding of the General Retail Industry Award (GRIA) and National Employment Standards (NES).
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to payroll accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines.
- High levels of discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive employee information.
